The Wedding People

I really enjoyed The Wedding People. I listened to the audiobook at the peak of my breakup, and it was a breath of fresh air on my early morning walks.

I hated how Phoebe's husband treated her, ending their marriage without trying to work it out. You know those relationship issues that are silent, where you can't quite pinpoint what's going wrong? Instead of communicating, one person starts checking out or looking for solace elsewhere. They leave their partner in the relationship and go off to find a temporary or permanent fix.

I understood how Phoebe felt; it was too close to home. So meeting the wedding people on that very day was pure bliss for her. They brought much-needed drama into her life and distracted her from her plan to end it all. Even though Lila was selfish, I stood with her.

There's no way I'd allow someone to take her own life in the hotel I'd rented for my wedding. Still, Phoebe's choice to tell Lila about her plans was a selfish act too. I wonder what she expected Lila to do.

I also liked that the wedding didn't go through. Lila would have hated the marriage. She would have tried to stay in it, and it would have drained her.

Phoebe was so courageous not to go back to her ex-husband. He didn't deserve her. He was selfish as hell. Looking back, there was a whole lot of selfishness in this book and, to be fair, people really are selfish. Personally, I've never met a man who wasn't. They put themselves and their needs first. So it was refreshing to see a woman stand up for what she wanted and follow through.

Marla, Gary's sister, was really annoying. If I had a sister-in-law like her, best believe I'd stand up to her. Lila let her get her way too often, which only made Marla treat her worse.

I don't have much to say about Patricia, Lila's mom, other than that she seemed overbearing. As for Nat and Suz, I'm not sure what to make of them. I've never had a milestone that required inviting friends, but if that day comes, best believe I'm only inviting the people who are close to me at that moment.

Overall, almost everyone in the book had lost something in one way or another: Phoebe lost her husband, her marriage, and both her parents; Lila lost her dad, and Patricia her husband; and Gary's ex-wife, who was also Juice's mum and Jim's sister, had died.

I hope Jim and Lila end up together, and Gary and Phoebe too.
